What is “Brain Fog” and how to Get Rid of It

According to Wikipedia Clouding of Consciousness, also known as brain fog or mental fog, is a term used in conventional medicine denoting an abnormality in the “regulation” of the “overall level” of consciousness that is mild and less severe than a delirium (acute confusional state). The sufferer experiences a subjective sensation of mental clouding described as feeling “foggy”.

I have had patients tell me they feel like they are not firing on all cylinders or that they’re living with a veil over their existence. Maybe you have felt this way before. Maybe you thought it was part of the normal aging process.  This is something that many times can be corrected. Let me begin with explaining how the brain, brain stem and spinal cord can be the cause of this brain fog.

cord_stretched_normal_smallThe spinal cord is encased in your spinal column. (See image) The cord is attached (tethered) at the bottom to the sacrum and it’s attached to the brain stem up top, which is attached to the brain. We have this very sensitive and very important nervous system tissue that’s protected by the skull and vertebra. The problem is that the vertebra can move and get misaligned which stretch and distort the cord.

The thousands of nerves in the spinal cord that are being distorted DO NOT like to be stretched. In fact, they hate being stretched. Nerves are not like wires. If you stretch wires they conduct electricity until they break. Nerves on the other hand can stretch a lot without breaking. If it’s a mild stretch, they simply don’t conduct every impulse, which leads to mild problems or even disease. If the stretch is increased, they stop working all together. Luckily, if the stretch is removed, they start working almost instantly.
When there’s enough stretch in just the right spots, you get Brain Fog.

Brain Fog can last for short periods of time if your spine isn’t too twisted, but can last for years if your spine is very twisted. In fact, people get used to it. These people can perform daily functions just fine although it’s harder to concentrate. They think it’s a part of life and don’t give it much thought.

I’ve told this story to enough people now and here’s where I discover some confusion. People tend to think of the spinal cord like a piece of dental floss. That the spinal cord can move up and down as much as needed and spread out any stretch along the cord uniformly. But this is not true, because at every vertebra (spinal bone) there are small ligaments that attach the cord to the bone. There is a little give with these ligaments and they allow a little stretch, but I’m talking millimeters here.

Therefore when parts of the spine get misaligned and distorted, the spinal cord gets distorted and doesn’t work nearly as well. Everyone reading this has some form of this going on whether they’re symptomatic or not. It’s very common, but so are a lot of diseases. Common does not equate to normal.

Nerves are different than wires. Wires conduct current and voltage. Nerves conduct impulses. The number of impulses per second is the message. As nerves get stretched, some of the impulses don’t get through the stretched part of the nerve and are lost as part of the message. Because of this, organs do not get the correct message from the brain. The same thing happens with the organs sending messages back to the brain.

What’s the result? Disease and all kinds of health problems. All this from bony misalignment’s in the spine causing spinal cord stretch and therefore stretching of the thousands of individual nerves in the cord itself.

When the bony misalignment’s are corrected, nerve function is restored and organs work properly again. It’s an absolute joy to be able to give this gift to people; to take away the brain fog they’ve been dealing with for years. It might seem complicated, but it is not. It is understanding the mechanics of the body, what goes wrong, how to identify it and how to correct it. There are so many issues that can easily be treated by correcting bones out of place that the body cannot self correct because there is no muscle available to pull the bone back into place. Traditional chiropractic does not do this. You need Advanced BioStructural Correction to make the changes. Take a moment on your next visit and tell Dr. Aberle any symptoms that you have and if they could be related to spinal cord stretching.
