As a chiropractor a common question is, "What's better, a soft or firm mattress?"
The answer is always a firm mattress. Here's a little background on the whole subject. If you've looked through my website you'll see I'm huge into posture and body mechanics. Most people think of good posture as being a good thing but not critical to health like I have come to realize. It took doing the work and seeing the miraculous changes that were possible when you improved someones mechanical function by improving their posture. If I can't convince you of that right now, that's ok because it took me years to finally realize it was a fact of life, not a wish or desire.
To help maintain your posture you must sleep properly or else just sleeping causes mechanical problems that accumulate with every nights sleep. Not a desirable occurrence. You can think of it as maybe every year sleeping on a soft mattress is like one small fender bender a year. By themselves each incident isn't huge, but as they accumulate, overtime your health deteriorates quickly.
Ideally you need to sleep on a firm mattress, with a pillow that's the perfect height made of towels that don't compress and change as you sleep on them. When the pillow height is just right and not too high or too low, your body will relax and you'll sleep really well. Plus your mechanics won't get worse due to sleeping.
What's the ideal mattress you ask? After years of searching it's a 6" piece of dense foam put on top of your box springs. Throw away your old mattress and use this foam instead. Every four months simply rotate or flip the foam to keep it in good shape for years. This foam is durable yet very inexpensive. At the time of this writing a king size piece of 6" dense foam is only $360 plus tax (if you live in Kansas) plus shipping which can run between $80 and $100. A queen size piece of foam is $260 and a twin is $165. It doesn't get any better then this. Why so cheap? Because there's no middle man. You buy directly from a foam distributor. I don't make any money either, but I share the information because our Advanced BioStructural Correction™ treatments work much better if people aren't screwing themselves up at night in a soft, saggy bed.
You simply have no idea what I'm talking about until you experience it, but you would have no idea that this option even existed unless I talked about it. This is the first step towards finding a solution for your bed and a better nights sleep.
Very soon I'll have a sample of this foam in my office for anyone to come in and try. It's firm but feels soft. It's relatively inexpensive when you look at a Select Comfort bed (Sleep Number bed) or the soft Tempur-Pedic mattress. These cost between $800 and $2000. Call the office to find out more information.
